47401 PROJECT
Preservation News (2026)

UPDATE JULY 2026
This year our small group of volunteers has been continuing efforts on 47401's overhaul. Here are some examples of our work so far.

The radiator header tank was found to be pinholed, with corrosion having slowly worked its way through the base of the tank. We have re-plated the base of the tank using 6mm sheet steel to ensure a prolonged future service life.

Fabrication work on the rad headers themselves is now complete. They have undergone a visual inspection before having corrosion resistant 2K paint applied. This extremely hard wearing coating should provide many years of protection to keep the reworked headers in good condition.

The cooler group roof section has had further attention, with welding repairs being made to the number two fan mounting plate. We have also started to apply paint to the completed sections of the cooler group, whilst continuing to strip and repair the underside where needed.

Some work has also been directed to the locomotive's structure, where corrosion had permeated the metalwork at the corners of the auxiliary room roof. This has now been rectified with some targeted repairs.

We have also been taking the opportunity to refurbish the radiator shutters, whilst the roof section is removed.

We are thankfully getting nearer to the point where reassembly of some of the key components can start to take place, such as the rad headers being re-fitted to the cooler group. Once again we greatly appreciate all support as we work towards completing '401's overhaul and returning her to the rails.
